The unique 'barefoot gate guardians' in the temple, painted with Western features, represent the Dutch, who were defeated by Koxinga and reimagined as lieutenants guarding the temple gates. These characters have been given the symbolism opening the gate rather than adhering to strict historical details. They are also known as the Door Gods. Through this reinterpretation, former adversaries are transformed into community protectors, becoming an integral part of local identity.
